The Neem Tree has become a key species in reforestation and land restoration efforts in the Sahel as part of the Great Green Wall initiative. This fast-growing evergreen, reaching up to 20 metres in height, thrives in arid and semi-arid climates, making it well-suited to combat desertification and support sustainable livelihoods in the region.
The tree is renowned for its medicinal properties. Its bark, rich in antifungal and antibacterial compounds, supports traditional remedies for infections and wounds, aligning with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being. Neem leaves, used to treat skin conditions, fever, and diabetes, contribute to accessible healthcare solutions for underserved communities. Neem oil, extracted from the seeds, serves as both a treatment for skin diseases and a natural insecticide, supporting sustainable farming practices (SDG 2: Zero Hunger and SDG 15: Life on Land).
Beyond its medicinal benefits, the Neem Tree enhances soil fertility, provides shade, and prevents soil erosion, making it vital for restoring degraded lands. Its use in agroforestry systems supports local economies through the production of medicinal products and organic pest control solutions, promoting SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
By improving health, agriculture, and ecosystems, the Neem Tree plays a significant role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals while contributing to the success of the Great Green Wall initiative.
