The Silk Cotton Tree, while originally native to Central and South America, has been successfully integrated into the Sahel region as part of agroforestry and reforestation efforts under the Great Green Wall initiative. This fast-growing, majestic tree, capable of reaching 30 metres in height, thrives in arid conditions, providing a wide, spreading canopy that offers critical shade in the Sahel’s harsh climate. Its thick trunk and light-green, glossy compound leaves make it a striking and functional presence in the landscape.

The tree’s cotton-like fluff, derived from its large, spiny fruits, serves as a vital source of fibre for local use, supporting sustainable livelihoods (SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth). Its medicinal properties, widely employed in traditional remedies, contribute to community health and well-being (SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being). By offering shade and improving microclimates, the tree helps mitigate desertification and promotes sustainable land management (SDG 15: Life on Land).

Additionally, the Silk Cotton Tree supports food security through its indirect role in improving soil conditions and providing shelter for other crops (SDG 2: Zero Hunger). Its multiple uses for fibre, medicine, and environmental stabilisation make it an invaluable addition to the Sahel’s ecosystems and communities, directly advancing several Sustainable Development Goals.
